Cosmetic product testing: what the process looks like and why it's crucial for consumer safety

Testiranje kozmetičkih proizvoda: kako izgleda proces i zašto je ključno za sigurnost potrošača

For years I've been getting inquiries about selling cosmetics and herbal remedies, but there's a very good reason why I didn't want to do business that way even though I had both customers and a market. When it comes to testing cosmetic products and the regulations they have to comply with , a lot of brands enter the practice with skipped steps, and that's something I was never prepared to do.

I have been a public advocate for safety and regulations since 2018 and for me this is the only right way. There is no skipping steps or compromising when it comes to the safety and health of consumers of Wild Mallow products. That is why, after formulating the product, we started testing what cosmetics regulations require of us. Below you will find what these tests are and why we choose transparency regarding the evidence of the test findings.

Tests that every cosmetic product must pass

Every cosmetic product must have a CPSR and PIF document by law. In addition to these regulatory compliances, there are also tests that are not mandatory, but we conduct them. What do these documents actually mean and represent?

Cosmetic Product Safety Report (CPSR)

The Cosmetic Product Safety Report (CPSR) or Safety for short, is a mandatory document for all cosmetic products sold in the European Union and the United Kingdom, and serves to ensure that the products are safe for the health of consumers under normal or reasonably foreseeable use. It is a key part of the product documentation and includes a detailed toxicological assessment based on the formula and raw materials, in addition to concluding whether the product is safe for public use. The report must be prepared and signed by a qualified safety assessor, and consists of two main parts: safety information and a final safety assessment.

All our cosmetic products have Safety, and although it is a confidential document, I made sure that transparency was fully respected, so under our products you can find a certificate of existence of Safety, an audit by a safety assessor and a conclusion on the product's safety assessment.

Product Information File (PIF)

The Product Information File (PIF) is a mandatory collection of documentation for cosmetic products sold in the European Union and the United Kingdom, and serves as proof of the product's safety, quality and effectiveness. We must keep it for at least 10 years after the last batch of products is released on the market (hopefully we won't see that), and we must have it ready for inspection by the competent authorities if they submit a request for inspection . The PIF includes the product description, the CPSR discussed above, production data and information on all raw materials.

Below our products you can also find evidence of physical and chemical stability tests and shelf life statements, microbiological tests, tests for the presence of heavy metals and pH product compliance.

Dermatological testing of cosmetic products

Dermatological studies help to assess the safety of cosmetic products, determining whether a product causes allergies or irritation. These tests are always carried out under the supervision of qualified dermatologists who assess the skin types of adult volunteers. The product is kept on the skin under a bandage for 48 or 72 hours. We have chosen the extended dermatological test, during which a dermatological test is carried out on 50 volunteers (half with normal skin and half with sensitive skin). It is recommended for products intended for sensitive skin, children, and for products that come into contact with the eyes or intimate areas. We definitely recommend that you do an additional patch test before using any product on your skin.

Given that our products in the Symbiotic line will be intended specifically for adults and children with sensitive skin, an extended dermatological test is an important and fundamental thing for us that proves the safety of our products. You will also find these tests under our Symbiotic products.

Proof of quality through transparency

The mission of the Wild Mallow brand is to deliver safe, reliable, healthy and stable low tox products with proof of the combination of nature and science, and we have achieved this through our transparency since the very beginning of the brand.

Although the results of our tests prove the safety and correctness of the product, we are aware that each person is individual and that there is, albeit a very small, possibility that our products will not suit someone, so I would like to refer you to a blog post on how to do a patch test before using a new cosmetic product for the first time.
